Club members volunteered in hosting this two day event in which over 30 scouts attended a ground school, camped at the

merit badges. Thanks for all of the hard work, everyone! This was a fun weekend.
Club Meeting: September 30, 2010
September's meeting included a presentation on the FAA WINGS Program.
This program encourages pilots to continually enhance their knowledge of aviation learn more about aviation and can be used
as credit toward a biennial flight review. At our meeting, we also recognized Dennis Harwell and Geoff Dyke for recently earning
their pilots' certificates. Glen Dupaul was recognized for his recent solo flight and was confirmed as the club's new secretary.
Field Trip: September 18, 2010
This field trip involved a tour of the DFW ARTCC facility.
Field Trip: July 31, 2010
Ten of us attended Saturday's tour of the DFW TRACON, and it was awesome. Our group was split into two teams.
One team first went to the east tower, and the other group stayed at the TRACON to get a look at one of the busiest
TRACONs in the nation. Saturdays are usually a bit slower than most of the week, and this one was no exception. Still there were
plenty of airplanes landing at DFW, Love and other airports in the Metroplex. After about an hour the groups swapped
locations, and we finished the tour around 4 PM. Many thanks to Jeff Frye for helping to set up this tour.
In the News! June 8, 2010
A recent article in the Greenville Herald Banner featured Karen McClellen, one our graduates of the
2010 ground school. Some of you know her as the lady who provided the food each week during the ground
school and also at our last club meeting. Her love of flying has caused others to take notice. Be sure to
read the article, Love at First
Flight.
Club Meeting: May 20, 2010
Our guest speaker was Jeff Frye, from the DFW TRACON. He discussed the DFW class B airpsace and
showed some very enlightening videos. A bodacious meal was prepared by Karen McClellen.

The flying club participated in the EAA Fly-in by providing coffee, doughnuts & orange juice.M
Taildragger Weekend: April 30 - May 1, 2010
Instructors Jake Huffman and Drew Freeman, from Huffman Avivation,
brought in a 1947 Aeronca 7AC Champ and a Cessna 140 for our Taildragger Weekend. Instruction included a short ground
school and one-on-one flight training.
Scout Aviation Workshop: April 9-10, 2010
We flew over 40 Boy and Girl Scouts, and most were able to complete their Aviation Merit
badge. In addition, we were able to credit EAA chapter 914 with over 40 Young Eagle flights.
The weather was great. We had six airplanes to help with the flying and the entire operation
went off without any significant hitches. Thanks for all of your help in making this a successful workshop!

RECENT NEW FAA WRITTEN TEST COMPLETIONS
RECENT NEW FIRST SOLOS
Glen Dupaul: Friday evening, September 10, Glen Dupaul did successfully complete a flight in the club's Cessna without
his instructor onboard. The odd thing is that he didn't even notice the instructor was gone! Okay, not really. Glen did a good
job and looks forward to more solo flights.
Congratulations, Glen.
Cheryl-Annette Parker: I am pleased to announce that Cheryl-Annette Parker soloed Wednesday, Dec 16, in the club's Cessna.
She did a fine job and the plane can be used again for flying without major repair. When asked if she was scared when she was to solo,
she replied, "No, not really". Ah, confidence plus.
Congratulations Cheryl-Annette, and welcome to the brotherhood and sisterhood of aviators and aviatrixes.
Chuck Fields: Congratulations to Chuck Fields for a most successful solo on 2 Oct 2009. Not only that but he did it at
Commerce. Jim Folks, his instructor, said that Chuck had no fear of the shorter runway at Commerce.
Well done, Chuck.
Dennis Harwell: Know Ye all by these Presents, that on the 18th of May, 2009, Dennis "The Eagle" Harwell successfully
manipulated the controls of the Cessna 150, with the full knowledge and consent of his instructor thereof, and without
injury to his self, and without damage to the aerial vehicle upon which he did so magnificently perform, did, without any
assistance, complete two stop-and-go landings and a full stop. It must be noted that he had the presence of mind, with
the good fortune of his feat accomplished, to stop by and pick up his instructor, and taxied back to the hangar.
Congratulations brave new pilot, Harwell!!
Geoff Dyke: On 13 April 2009, at approximately 1900, Geoff Dyke soloed the Archer.
When asked if he was scared, he said, "Naw, without the instructor yacking in my ear, I was
able to concentrate on my flying." That's gratitude for you.
Good job, Geoff. Welcome to the new world of aviation!!
Jeff Nelson: Jeff (Dr. Jeff) Nelson did, on the First Day of October in the Year
2008, defy the laws of gravity and hurled himself, SOLO, and without external
assistance, into the air around Majors Field in the Piper Archer aircraft. He
skillfully manipulated the airplane to contact the runway with minimum damage
to the runway. More good news: the airplane is flyable again!!
Congratulations Jeff on your 1st SOLO FLIGHT. After the flight Jeff said those were
the best solo landings he'd ever made. Yes, of course!
Kyle Graves: At 1930 on Friday, 29 August 2008, young Kyle Graves (they are all
young to me) did fly WITHOUT his instructor for the first time in his life. We
call that "initial solo". And the good news is that it looks like we'll
be able to use the Cessna again.
Congratulations to Kyle on his 1st SOLO FLIGHT.
Josh Bartley: Donnie "Nerves of Steel" Royal reported that, on July 21, 2008, Josh
Bartley had flown unassisted and without instructor assistance. In fact,
the instructor was on the ground nervously awaiting the arrival of the aircraft.
It was reported that the Cessna will be usable again for more flights with
very little repair work required. All kidding aside, CONGRATULATIONS JOSH.
You have now joined that elite group of humans who have experienced the
thrill of his 1st SOLO FLIGHT.
RECENT NEW PRIVATE PILOTS
Dale Crumpton, one of our Associate members, recently received his Instrument rating
in his Cessna T210. His instructors were Dennis Mathis and Harry Andonian. (More)
